What Is Hypnosis?

When guided into hypnosis by a professional hypnotherapist, you enter an intentional state of calm that reprograms your subconscious mind by canceling negative beliefs and behaviors and replacing them with positive ones. Your critical mind, the filter between your conscious and subconscious mind, usually rejects these positive suggestions because of deeply rooted beliefs. During guided hypnosis you are in a heightened state of suggestibility, which allows the positive suggestions to bypass the critical mind, enter your subconscious mind, and take lasting effect.

You may be surprised to hear that you’re in the state of hypnosis every day. You know that fuzzy la-la land you’re in between waking up and falling asleep? When you’re not fully awake, but not fully asleep? That’s hypnosis. You know that feeling you get when you’re driving home and you check out from the experience of driving because your mind starts dissecting the passive-aggressive convo you had with your boss? And you safely pull into your driveway but don’t remember the last ten minutes of your drive? That’s hypnosis. You know that blissed-out, timeless vibe you flow into when you’re in “the zone”? That’s hypnosis.

These everyday “dreamy” states are all hypnosis. There’s nothing supernatural about it; it’s an organic space for the mind-body-spirit to inhabit — the three of them enjoy playing together there. The juicy opportunities living in hypnosis start to flow when the state of hypnosis is intentionally (as opposed to unconsciously) entered, and you or a trained hypnotherapist have specific positive messages and images to plant in the subconscious mind.

I’m a Certified Hypnotherapist, and I often work with pregnant women to overcome their fears surrounding pregnancy, birth, and motherhood. Here’s how it works: We deal primarily in the positive, rarely putting emphasis on the negative. This is not the type of inner work that requires you to relive that time you were humiliated in front of your third-grade class because you forgot how to spell your name during the spelling bee. (I knew how to spell my name; the pressure just got to me.) Before, and sometimes during, hypnosis we briefly name the negative beliefs, behaviors, attitudes, or thought processes we want to change, then shift focus to the positive alternatives we prefer. We take those specific positive alternatives, enter the comfy state of hypnosis, and reprogram the subconscious mind.

When this state is purposefully entered, the potential holistic effects you can create are limitless — you can cancel mental blocks, nurture your soul, heal your body, and transform your life — all fun stuff that also makes babies really chill and happy. And to support the relaxation recordings (a form of hypnosis) you’ve already been listening to, I’m going to teach you how to intentionally put yourself into hypnosis.
